Whether you seek to engage in formal prayer, informal mental conversations, or merely by doing good and putting positive energy into the universe, there is no right or wrong way to pray to your higher power. Once you open up to this idea and implement that spiritual connection, you will experience your long-awaited spiritual awakening, the answer to that pesky spiritual malady we suffer from as alcoholics. We can become aware that humility is not thinking less of oneself, but rather thinking of oneself less, and that we are worthy of self-compassion. Compassion for others means appreciating their pain and experiencing a heart-based response to it. Compassion evokes an interest in offering support, understanding, and kindness to others when they struggle, make mistakes, or fail. Self-compassion consists of responding the same way toward ourselves when we have a difficult time, act out on our personality challenges, or experience something we don’t like about ourselves. Having compassion for ourselves means that we honor our humanness with self-acceptance when we bump up against our limitations and fall short of our ideals.

What Does It Mean to Suffer from a Spiritual Malady?

Most of us hate to deal with negative thoughts or emotions—it just doesn’t feel good. These are our thought suppressions and emotional repressions that also bias the system towards threat physiology. Physical threats come in the forms of things like infections – prions, viruses, bacteria, protozoa, and mycelia, or things like toxins—pollutants, pesticides, radiation, medications, and substances of addiction. Also, threats come from physical traumas—attacks, assaults, accidents, or abuse—lions, tigers, bears, oh my! Also, tornados, hurricanes, droughts, fires, global warming, and war threaten us physically. Lack of clean soil, water, air, and lack of nutritious food are a threat to us.

The other threat phenotype is one of relative immobilization where we retreat, ruminate, isolate, dissociate and experience bodily and spiritual disconnections. This is frequently referred to as “falter (or freeze) and faint” physiology. Alcoholics Anonymous bases the 12-step program on 12 affirmations, or what they call 12 traditions. spiritual malady These expressions that help people recovering from addiction regain a spiritual footing once again. How to Understand How an Addict May Suffer Spiritually
